Verble - Daily Verb Transformation Puzzle Game

A web-based word puzzle game inspired by Wordle where players transform verbs through conjugations and tenses within a limited number of guesses. Features daily challenges, streak tracking, and sharea

Overview

Verble is a daily word puzzle game that puts a linguistic twist on the popular Wordle format. Instead of guessing a hidden word letter by letter, players must transform a given verb through its various forms—present, past, past participle, gerund, and different conjugations—to match a target form within a limited number of attempts.

Each day presents a new verb transformation challenge. Players start with a base verb and must guess the correct transformed version. The game provides feedback on each guess, indicating whether the transformation is correct or offering hints about tense, person, or form. This creates an educational gameplay loop that teaches verb conjugation patterns while maintaining the addictive "one more try" quality of daily puzzle games.

The game tracks player statistics including win streaks, success rates, and average guesses per puzzle. Players can share their results on social media without spoilers, using an emoji grid system similar to Wordle that shows their guess pattern. Daily puzzles reset at midnight, encouraging players to return regularly and build consistent play habits.

The interface is clean and mobile-responsive, allowing quick gameplay sessions on any device. The game includes a practice mode where players can work through additional verb transformations beyond the daily challenge, helping language learners reinforce their understanding.

Challenges

Verb Validation Logic Creating a fair and accurate validation system for verb transformations was complex because English verbs have numerous valid forms (regular vs. irregular conjugations, contractions, regional variations) and players might enter technically correct answers that don't match the specific target form. The game needed to recognize valid alternative answers while still maintaining the puzzle's difficulty, and provide helpful feedback when guesses were close but not quite right, all without making the system too forgiving or too strict.

Solutions

Comprehensive Verb Dictionary with Smart Validation Built a extensive verb database that includes all standard conjugations, irregular forms, and common variations for each verb. Implemented a multi-tier validation system that first checks for exact matches, then evaluates grammatically correct alternatives, and finally analyzes partial matches to provide specific hints. When a player submits a valid verb form that doesn't match the target, the system provides contextual feedback like "correct tense, wrong person" or "right base verb, try past participle." Added a "accept alternative" feature that recognizes when multiple answers are equally valid (like "learned" vs. "learnt") and credits both. Included a hint system that progressively reveals information about the target form—starting with tense category, then person/number, then finally initial letters—allowing players to learn through guided discovery rather than pure trial and error

Results

Engaging Educational Game Experience Successfully created a daily puzzle game that makes verb conjugation practice entertaining rather than tedious. The Wordle-inspired format leverages proven engagement mechanics while teaching practical language skills. Players report improved verb recognition and conjugation abilities through regular play, demonstrating that the game effectively balances education with entertainment. The share functionality drives organic growth as players post their daily results on social media.
